Hvass & Hannibal in Communication Arts

Communication Arts is an American magazine about design and advertising with a long history and prestigious track record in covering creativity in these areas. When the editor got in touch with a brief to profile the Danish design studio Hvass & Hannibal and a modest travel budget to get to Copenhagen and back, I didn’t need to be asked twice.

The magazine wanted an article that explained what makes the unique creative duo Sofie Hannibal and Nan Na Hvass tick. What are their creative backgrounds and influences? How have their careers developed? How do they approach new projects? What has made them so successful? Planning the trip to Denmark was exciting, interviewing them was fascinating, and hopefully readers will think that the article demonstrates how two creatives can think and work as one, swapping conceptual, design, art working, typographic and various other roles seemingly at will.

I’m also a big fan of Scandinavian culture, in particular the Viking period and crime fiction from the region, so it was a treat to see where The Killing was made and to visit the country’s national museum. Even managed to locate several Irish pubs in Copenhagen… The article appeared in the November/December 2015 issue, Advertising Annual 56.
